Snorkel Jaco runs tours 365 days a year — and the short answer is that Playa Mantas snorkels well in every season. Here's the honest breakdown of what changes between Costa Rica's dry and green seasons so you can pick the best time for your trip.
Dry Season: December through April
Costa Rica's dry season on the Central Pacific coast runs roughly December through April. During this period:
- Water visibility tends to be at its best — the reduced rainfall means less runoff and clearer, bluer water
- Calmer days overall, with lighter winds in the morning
- This is also peak tourist season in Jacó, so book your spot ahead of time
- Some of the best pelagic sightings (eagle rays, large schools of fish) tend to happen in this window
The 8am and 10am tours are especially beautiful in dry season — the light is clear, the water is settled from the night, and you often feel like you have the cove to yourself.
Green Season: May through November
The green season brings afternoon rain to the Central Pacific coast — but the mornings are often sunny and beautiful. The afternoon showers are usually brief and the air temperature stays warm. For snorkeling near Jacó in the green season:
- The 8am and 10am tours typically happen in clear, sunny conditions before the afternoon clouds build
- Water visibility can be slightly reduced after heavy rain, but Playa Mantas is a sheltered cove and recovers quickly
- Fewer tourists in Jacó means a more relaxed experience overall
- The marine life doesn't know it's "low season" — the reef is just as active
What about weather cancellations?
Weather cancellations from our side are rare. The cove at Playa Mantas is protected from the open ocean swells that affect surf beaches, so conditions that make Jacó beach rough often barely affect the cove. In our experience, we run tours on the vast majority of scheduled days. If we do need to reschedule due to unusual conditions, we contact guests directly and find an alternative time.
Best time of day?
Morning tours — the 8am or 10am slot — are almost always better than the noon departure. Morning wind is lighter, the water has settled overnight, and the fish tend to be more active. The noon tour is fine and runs daily, but if you have a choice, go earlier. See the full daily schedule.
