Planning a day in Jacó and wondering how much time to block off for snorkeling? Our tours run about 2 to 2.5 hours from start to finish, with roughly 1.5 hours in the water. Here's the full breakdown so you can fit it cleanly into your Costa Rica itinerary.
The full timeline, step by step
A typical Snorkel Jaco tour breaks down like this:
- Arrival & gear fitting (15–20 min): You meet your guide on the beach at Playa Mantas, about 25 minutes north of Jacó. We fit your mask, snorkel, and fins on the sand and go over the basics — how to breathe through the snorkel, how to clear water from the mask, and a quick safety orientation.
- In the water (approx. 1.5 hours): This is the main event. You'll explore the cove and rock formations with your guide, spot fish, sea stars, eels, and whatever else the ocean brings that day. We move at a relaxed pace — nobody rushes you.
- Wrap-up & photos (15–20 min): We return to the beach, rinse off, and your guide shares the free photos he took while you were underwater. This is usually when the excitement hits — people never realize how many fish were around them until they see the photos.
What time do tours run?
We run three departure times daily: 8:00 am, 10:00 am, and 12:00 pm. The morning sessions — especially the 8am start — tend to have the calmest water and best visibility near Jacó, as winds pick up later in the day along Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast. Families with kids often prefer the 8am or 10am slot to beat the midday heat.
All three times are available seven days a week. Message us on WhatsApp to check availability and reserve your spot — we keep group sizes small so everyone gets attention.
Can I stay longer?
Absolutely. After the guided portion ends, you're free to stay and enjoy Playa Mantas on your own. It's one of the only white-sand beaches on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast — calm, beautiful, and easy to relax on. Bring a change of clothes, sunscreen, and some colones for the snack stand if you want to make a half-day of it. You can Uber back to Jacó whenever you're ready.
Is 2 hours enough to actually see things?
More than enough. Our guide knows exactly where the fish congregate in the cove — the rocky ledges where the eels hide, the sandy patches where sea stars and rays like to rest, the spots where parrotfish and angelfish school in the afternoon light. In 1.5 hours of guided snorkeling near Jacó, most guests see more marine life than they expected. On a good day that can include tropical reef fish, moray eels, pufferfish, sea turtles (on occasion), and stingrays. See the full list of fish and marine life you might encounter.
What about the drive from Jacó?
Playa Mantas is about 25 minutes north of central Jacó by Uber. We don't offer group transportation — guests arrange their own ride, which keeps the tour price lower and gives you full flexibility on timing. Uber works reliably in Jacó.
