Best Time of Year to Snorkel in Jacó, Costa Rica

Costa Rica travel tips · Snorkel Jaco

One of the most common questions we get before a snorkel tour near Jacó Beach is simply: "When's the best time to come?" The honest answer is that you can snorkel our secluded cove north of Jacó all year round — but water clarity, weather, and crowds do shift with the seasons. Here's a straightforward, month-by-month look so you can plan the clearest, calmest day in the water.

Costa Rica has two seasons — and both work for snorkeling

The Central Pacific coast around Jacó runs on two seasons: the dry season (roughly December through April) and the green season (roughly May through November). Unlike a lot of destinations, neither one shuts snorkeling down. Because we take guests to a sheltered cove near Playa Mantas rather than open, exposed water, conditions stay far calmer and clearer than Jacó's main surf beach no matter the month.

Dry season (December–April): the clearest water

If your top priority is maximum visibility and sunshine, the dry season is the classic pick. Rainfall is low, the ocean tends to be at its clearest, and nearly every day is bright and warm. It's also the busiest and most expensive time to visit Costa Rica in general, so flights, rental cars, and villas book up early. If you're coming between December and April, reserve your snorkel tour a little ahead — our morning slots fill fastest.

Green season (May–November): fewer crowds, great value

Don't let the word "rainy" scare you off. In the green season, mornings on the Central Pacific are usually sunny and calm, with any rain tending to arrive as a short afternoon shower. That's exactly why we run our tours in the morning — you get the best light and the calmest water before the clouds build. You'll also share the beach with far fewer people, and this is when our low-season rate of $60 per person (versus the regular $70) applies. For a lot of travelers, green-season mornings are the sweet spot: quiet cove, good visibility, better prices.

Our tip: whatever month you choose, book a morning tour. We run three a day — 8am, 10am, and noon — and the 8am and 10am slots almost always have the calmest, clearest water and the best photos.

What actually affects visibility day to day

Season matters, but day-to-day clarity near Jacó comes down to a few simple things:

Because we've run more than 1,000 tours over four years at this one cove, we know how it reads on any given morning — and we'll always give you an honest heads-up if conditions aren't their best.

Morning tours give you the calmest water and the best visibility — any time of year.

So, when should YOU come?

If you want guaranteed sunshine and the clearest possible water, aim for the dry season (December–April) and book early. If you'd rather have the cove nearly to yourself and save on nearly everything, green-season mornings (May–November) are hard to beat — and you'll catch our lower seasonal pricing too. Either way, the tour itself is the same easy, beginner-friendly half-day: about 1.5 hours in the water, gear, in-water guide, and photos all included.
