The moment someone hears "rainy season" in Costa Rica, they assume it means cancelled activities, grey skies, and spending the whole trip inside. For snorkeling at Playa Mantas near Jacó, that assumption is flat wrong. October through December is actually one of the better times to be in the water here — and once you understand what the green season actually looks like on the ground, you'll see why.
What green season actually looks like in Jacó
Costa Rica's green season — sometimes called the rainy or low season — runs roughly May through mid-December along the Pacific coast. What most people picture is constant downpours. The reality on the ground is more nuanced: mornings are typically sunny and calm, with rain arriving in the afternoon, often between 2pm and 5pm, and clearing by evening. Many days don't see significant rain at all. The landscape is lush, deep green, and genuinely beautiful — hence the name.
This pattern matters for snorkeling because Bill runs tours at 8am, 10am, and noon. By the time afternoon showers roll in, you're already done, dried off, back in Jacó, and thinking about lunch. Almost every green season tour runs without interruption. We've been doing this for four years and over 1,000 tours — the green season months are not problem months.
Water conditions in October: better than you'd think
Here's something that surprises people: water visibility at Playa Mantas is often excellent during green season. The cove is naturally sheltered from open-ocean swell by its rocky headlands, and the calm conditions that come with lower tourist pressure mean less churning of the sandy bottom. On a typical October morning, the water is clear enough to see parrotfish, moray eels, and sea stars in detail from the surface.
Water temperature sits around 80–84°F through October and November — warm enough that nobody needs a wetsuit. The combination of warm water, calm mornings, clear visibility, and quiet surroundings makes for a genuinely good snorkeling experience. Not a compromised one. Not "pretty good for the rainy season." Just good snorkeling.
Fewer crowds: the underrated advantage
High season in Jacó (roughly December 20 through April) is genuinely packed. Hotels fill up, the beaches get crowded, and restaurants fill by 7pm. Low season is the opposite. The Playa Mantas cove — which is always secluded — feels even more like your own private beach. Groups get the full attention of the guide without anyone rushing through or squeezing extra people into a session. If you've ever wanted an uncrowded snorkel experience in Costa Rica, October through December is when you get it.
The green season special: $60/person + book 2, get the 3rd half off
On top of better-than-expected conditions and lower crowds, there's a direct financial reason to snorkel in green season. From October 1 through December 15, tours are $60 per person instead of the regular $70. That's a meaningful saving for a family or group — $40 off for a family of four at the regular price point.
And right now, there's an additional offer running: book 2 tours and get the 3rd half off. That means a group of three people pays $60 + $60 + $30 = $150 instead of $210 at the high season rate. For a family of six, every third spot comes at half price. It stacks — and it only runs through December 15, so if you're visiting before then, this is the time to lock in your dates.
Why Playa Mantas works year-round
A lot of snorkel sites in Costa Rica are boat-dependent — meaning if seas are rough or the weather is uncertain, the boat doesn't go. Playa Mantas is shore snorkeling, which means there's no boat, no marina, and no open-ocean exposure. The cove is naturally protected. That makes it far more consistent across seasons than exposed boat-dive sites, and it means the green season weather pattern doesn't affect us the way it affects other operators.
Playa Mantas is also the only white-sand beach near Jacó — a rare thing on this stretch of the Pacific coast, where most beaches are dark volcanic sand. The combination of white sand, clear shallow water, and a rocky reef makes it a distinctive spot in any season. Bill has been guiding here for four years because this cove consistently produces good sightings. Green season is no exception.
Book before December 15 to lock in the special
The low season pricing and the book-2-get-3rd-half-off offer both end on December 15. After that, high season rates kick in and the cove gets busier as the holiday travel crowd arrives. If your trip falls anywhere in October, November, or the first two weeks of December, this is the window to move on. You can reserve your dates directly on snorkeljaco.com, or message Bill on WhatsApp with your group size and dates to claim the special deal.
