Where Does Snorkeling Take Place Near Jacó Beach?

Snorkel Jaco · Jacó Beach, Costa Rica

Snorkel Jaco tours meet at Playa Mantas — a sheltered white-sand cove about 25 minutes north of central Jacó. It's one of Costa Rica's best-kept secrets on the Central Pacific: calm, clear water with real reef life, away from Jacó's surf beach.

Why we snorkel at Playa Mantas, not Jacó Beach

Jacó's main beach is a beautiful surf beach — long, powerful waves, and sandy bottom stirred up by the break. That's excellent for surfing and walking, but it makes for very poor snorkeling visibility. Playa Mantas is completely different: a sheltered cove protected by headlands, no surf, white sand, and a calm bay that stays clear year-round. The reef and rock formations at Playa Mantas host a permanent fish population — not occasional visitors washed in by current, but fish that live there and have established territories over years.

What the location looks like

Playa Mantas sits between two green headlands. The beach is white sand (rare on the Central Pacific coast, which is mostly grey volcanic sand), and the cove arcs gently around a sheltered bay. Rocky outcroppings extend into the water from both sides, creating the reef habitat that hosts most of the marine life. The water is clearest in the shallow 5–10 foot range near the rocks — that's where the parrotfish, moray eels, pufferfish, and sea stars tend to concentrate.

The underwater statue: somewhere in the cove, there's a submerged statue that marine life has colonized over the years. It's become one of the most photographed spots on our tour — guests are always surprised to find it. Your guide knows where it is.
