If you've only seen Jacó's main beach — long, lively, and dark grey with surf — you'd never guess there's a quiet white-sand cove just up the coast. That's Playa Mantas, the only true white-sand beach in the Jacó area, and it happens to be the best place nearby to snorkel. Here's what makes it special and how to see it for yourself.
Where is Playa Mantas?
Playa Mantas sits about 25 minutes north of Jacó, tucked into a sheltered bay near the Punta Leona area. Because it's off the main strip, it stays calm and uncrowded — the kind of beach locals keep to themselves. A quick Uber from anywhere in Jacó gets you there for just a few dollars, so you don't need a rental car or a tour bus to enjoy it.
Why the water is so much clearer here
Jacó's main beach faces open ocean, which is why it's such a great surf spot — but all that wave action stirs up sand and darkens the water. Playa Mantas is different. The cove is protected from the big swell, so the water stays calm and clear, especially on bright mornings. That clarity is exactly what you want for snorkeling: you can actually see the fish, the rocks, and the sandy bottom instead of squinting into murky surf.
What you'll see snorkeling at Playa Mantas
The reef life sits close to shore here, so you don't have to be a strong swimmer to reach it. On a typical tour, guests spot schools of tropical fish, sea stars in the shallows, pufferfish, and the occasional eel or octopus tucked into the rocks. It's a living, colorful underwater world just a few feet off a calm white-sand beach — and because the cove is sheltered, it's gentle enough for first-timers and kids.
The easiest way to visit: a guided snorkel tour
You can walk onto Playa Mantas on your own, but to actually snorkel it well you want gear and someone who knows the cove. That's what we do. Our guided snorkel tour includes fitted mask, snorkel, and fins, an in-water guide who knows exactly where the fish are, and free photos of your day — so you just show up and get in the water. No boat, no all-day excursion, no stress.
It's about 1.5 hours in the water and costs $60 per person during low season (October 1 – December 15). We run three tours a day — 8am, 10am, and noon — and mornings tend to have the calmest, clearest water for the best visibility and photos.
Make a half-day of it
Because Playa Mantas is close and the tour is short, it's easy to fit around the rest of your trip. Snorkel in the morning, then have the afternoon free for the pool, the surf, or lunch back in Jacó. A lot of our guests tell us it ends up being the highlight of their whole Costa Rica vacation — see what guests say and you'll spot that theme over and over.
