The short answer: a lot. The cove at Playa Mantas — 25 minutes north of Jacó — hosts a thriving reef ecosystem year-round. Here's what guests typically spot on a Snorkel Jaco tour near Jacó Beach.
Common sightings on most tours
- Colorful tropical fish: parrotfish, sergeant majors, angelfish, butterflyfish, wrasses, and pufferfish are almost always present.
- Moray eels: large ones hide in the rock crevices and often peek out curiously. One of the most memorable encounters guests have.
- Sea stars: chocolate-chip sea stars on the sandy bottom are a favorite photo subject — bright orange and surprisingly large.
- Stingrays: spotted resting on the sand or gliding along the bottom. Peaceful and easy to observe from above.
- Octopus: masters of camouflage — your guide knows the spots where they like to hide and can point one out even when it's invisible to an untrained eye.
Occasional sightings (lucky days)
- Sea turtles: Pacific green and hawksbill turtles pass through the area, especially during nesting season. An electric moment when it happens.
- Spotted eagle rays: sometimes glide through in small groups — one of the most beautiful snorkeling sightings in Costa Rica.
- Whitetip reef sharks: resting on the bottom in deeper areas, completely harmless to snorkelers, and genuinely thrilling to spot.
- Nudibranches and other invertebrates: your guide can spot these tiny, colorful creatures that most people swim right past.
What about the underwater statue?
Yes — there's a genuine underwater statue in the cove that marine life has colonized over the years. Covered in coral and surrounded by fish, it's become one of the most photographed spots on the tour. More than one guest has mentioned it specifically in their reviews as a highlight they didn't expect.
Can I see all of this without experience?
Absolutely. No prior snorkeling experience is needed. We provide all gear, fit it for you on the beach, and your guide stays in the water with you throughout. See our guide on snorkeling with no experience — beginners are very welcome.
