One of the first things guests ask before a snorkel tour near Jacó Beach is simply, "What will we actually see down there?" The Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica is wonderfully alive, and because we snorkel a calm, sheltered cove where the reef life sits close to shore, you don't have to be an expert — or swim far — to spot it. Here's a friendly look at what's waiting in the water.
Colorful tropical fish — right near the surface
The stars of the show are the tropical fish that school around the rocky edges of the cove. On a typical morning you'll see flashes of yellow, silver, blue, and black darting in and out of the rocks — parrotfish, sergeant majors, pufferfish, and plenty of smaller reef species going about their day. Because the water is calm and shallow near the rocks, they're easy to watch without diving deep. Your guide knows the spots where they gather and will point them out as you go.
Sea stars, urchins, and tide-pool life
Look toward the sandy bottom and the rocks and you'll find a whole slower-moving world: chocolate-chip sea stars resting on the sand, sea urchins tucked into crevices, crabs, and the occasional ray gliding past. The tide pools along the edge of the cove are their own little ecosystem — great for kids and anyone who likes to spot the small stuff.
Why you see more here than off Jacó's main beach
Jacó's town beach is a fantastic surf spot, but its dark sand and churning waves make for murky water and very few fish. Our cove near Playa Mantas is the opposite: a sheltered, white-sand pocket where the water stays clear and the reef life hugs the shore. That's the whole reason we make the short trip north — it's where the Central Pacific actually shows off.
You don't need experience to see it all
Here's the part that surprises people: you don't need to be a strong swimmer or an experienced snorkeler to enjoy any of this. The water is calm, the fish are close, and your in-water guide stays with you the whole time, pointing out what you might miss and keeping first-timers comfortable. We've run more than 1,000 tours over four years, and we've guided everyone from nervous beginners to little kids right up to the fish. And with professional photos included, you'll actually get to keep the moment — no fumbling with a phone in a waterproof bag.
