With big expressive eyes and a slow, hovering way of swimming, the pufferfish is a guest favorite on our snorkel tours near Jacó. They often seem as curious about you as you are about them. Here's how to spot one in the Central Pacific, why they can balloon up to twice their size, and the single most important rule when you meet one.
How to recognize a pufferfish
Pufferfish are easy to pick out once you know the look: a rounded, slightly clumsy body, large eyes that swivel independently, and small fins that flutter to keep them hovering in place rather than darting like other fish. Many species in our waters are tan, grey, or golden, often dotted with spots. Because they're slow and unbothered, they're one of the most relaxing reef fish to simply float and watch.
Why they puff up
The pufferfish's famous trick is a defense mechanism. When a predator threatens them, they gulp water rapidly and inflate into a round, hard-to-swallow balloon — sometimes doubling in size. It's startling and effective, but it also stresses the fish, which is exactly why you should never try to make one puff up.
Where you'll see them
Pufferfish like to cruise the calm, shallow water near rocks and the sandy bottom — the same sheltered cove near Playa Mantas we snorkel on every tour. You don't need to be a strong swimmer to find them; they often hang out right where first-timers are comfortable. Clear, bright mornings are the best time to catch those big curious eyes looking back at you.
A gentle neighbor
For all their odd looks, pufferfish are peaceful and slow — no reason to be nervous around them. Keep a relaxed distance, float quietly, and you'll often get a long, close look. That calm, up-close encounter is exactly the kind of moment guests tell us made their trip.
