How Deep Is the Water Snorkeling at Playa Mantas?

Costa Rica travel tips · Snorkel Jaco

It's one of the most common questions we get before a tour: how deep is the water? The short version — you don't need deep water to see great fish here, and most of the best snorkeling at our cove near Playa Mantas happens close to shore, in water you can often stand up in. Here's exactly what to expect.

Shallow, clear snorkeling water at the Playa Mantas cove near Jacó, Costa Rica
Much of the best snorkeling at the cove is in shallow water you can stand up in.

Shallow where it counts

The reef life at our cove is concentrated near the rocks along the edges, and that's shallow water — roughly waist to chest deep in many spots. That's great news for snorkeling, because the fish, the light, and the color are all best in the shallows. You float on the surface, look down, and the action is right there a few feet below you.

You float on the surface — depth matters less than you'd think when the water's this clear.

You choose how deep you go

Snorkeling isn't diving — you stay at the surface the whole time, so the depth under you is really up to your comfort level. Prefer to keep your feet near the bottom? Stay in the shallow zone along the rocks. More confident and want to drift over slightly deeper water to look down at a bigger view? Your guide will take you there. Either way you're breathing easily through the snorkel the entire time.

What if I'm not a strong swimmer?

You'll be fine, and you won't be alone. The cove is calm and sheltered, we fit everyone with a mask, snorkel, and fins, and floatation is available if you'd like it. An in-water guide stays with the group the whole tour, so nervous first-timers and kids can hang in the shallows while stronger swimmers explore a bit farther. We cover this more in our guide on snorkeling for non-swimmers.

Kids stick to the shallows along the rocks, where the fish are easiest to spot.

Is the bottom rocky or sandy?

It's a mix. The center of the cove is white sand, and the fish gather around the rocky edges and reef patches. Water shoes aren't required, but if you like to walk in and out over rocks, a pair can make it comfier. Once you're floating, none of it matters — you're gliding over the top.

The bottom line on depth

Don't let worries about deep water talk you out of this. The best snorkeling at Playa Mantas is shallow, calm, and close to shore, and you control how far out you go. That's a big reason guests of every age and ability have a great day here. You can see what the cove and the fish look like, and book your spot, at snorkeljaco.com.
