Snorkeling in Jacó for Non-Swimmers & Nervous Beginners

Costa Rica travel tips · Snorkel Jaco

“I'm not really a strong swimmer — can I still snorkel?” We hear this all the time, and the answer is a confident yes. Our snorkel tour near Jacó, Costa Rica is built so that nervous beginners and non-swimmers can relax and enjoy the underwater world safely. Here's exactly how.

We snorkel a calm, sheltered cove

The number one reason non-swimmers do great with us: we don't snorkel Jacó's rough main beach. We take guests to a sheltered white-sand cove about 25 minutes north, where the water is calm and clear and the reef life is close to shore. There's no fighting waves or current — you can see beautiful fish in shallow, gentle water close to the beach.

Life jackets and floats are available

Nobody has to tread water or swim hard. We provide life jackets and flotation so you can float face-down and watch the reef without any effort at all. Many of our happiest guests barely kick — they just relax on the surface, breathe through the snorkel, and take it all in.

An in-water guide stays with you

You're never on your own. Our guide is in the water with you the whole time, helping you fit your mask, showing you how to breathe through the snorkel, and staying close for reassurance. For a lot of guests, having someone right there is what turns “I'm nervous” into “that was amazing.” We've guided many visitors who'd never put their face in the ocean before.

Great for kids, too. The same calm water and floats that help nervous adults make this an easy, happy first snorkel for children. Families are some of our favorite guests.

Go at your own pace

There's no rush and no pressure. You can start in ankle-deep water, get comfortable with the gear, and ease out only as far as you like. If you want to hang near the shallows the whole time, that's perfectly fine — there's plenty to see right there. Guests consistently tell us how patient and calm the experience is; see their words on our reviews.

Give it a try

Being a weak swimmer shouldn't keep you out of one of the best parts of a Costa Rica trip. With a calm cove, life jackets, and a guide beside you, snorkeling near Jacó is genuinely for everyone.
