No, you don't. All snorkeling equipment is included in your tour — mask, snorkel, and fins — fitted for you on the beach before you enter the water. You don't need to buy, rent, or carry any gear.
What Snorkel Jaco provides
- Mask: multiple sizes available, fitted on your face for a proper seal before you enter the water. A well-fitted mask is the most important piece of equipment — a leaky mask is miserable; a properly sealed one is invisible after five minutes.
- Snorkel: dry-top snorkels that prevent water from flooding in when a wave passes over. Clean and maintained between tours.
- Fins: matched to your shoe size. Moving with fins is effortless once you get the kick rhythm, and they make it easy to keep up with the guide.
- Life jacket: available at no charge for anyone who wants one. Highly recommended for non-swimmers or anyone who wants to float effortlessly and just look down.
Can I bring my own gear if I have it?
Absolutely — if you have a mask and snorkel you're comfortable with, feel free to bring them. Your own gear is always welcome. Just let your guide know when you arrive so he can check the fit. We'll still provide fins regardless.
What you SHOULD bring yourself
The gear is covered. What you'll want to bring:
- Reef-conscious sunscreen — regular sunscreen is damaging to coral reefs. Mineral-based or "reef-safe" formulas protect your skin without harming marine life. Apply before you leave, not at the beach.
- Swimsuit worn under your clothes — saves time changing on the beach
- Towel
- Water and a snack — you'll be in the sun and swimming for over an hour
- A waterproof phone case or camera — your guide takes underwater photos, but having your own camera means more shots
- Change of clothes — you'll be wet and salty after the swim
What about rashguards?
A rashguard (thin, long-sleeve swim shirt) is a great idea for snorkeling — it protects your back from sun while you're face-down in the water for an extended period. Not required, but many guests are glad they wore one. They also provide a small amount of warmth if you run cool. You can buy one inexpensively in Jacó if you don't have one.
Just bring yourself — we've got everything else
