How to spot the convict tang near Jacó
Watch for small silver fish with bold black vertical bars, usually feeding in groups along the rocks. Convict tangs move together in numbers, grazing as they go, so where you find one you'll usually find many.
5 fun facts about the convict tang
- Named for the 'prison stripes'. Six dark vertical bars across a silvery body give the convict tang its unmistakable, well, convict look.
- A champion traveler as a baby. Its larvae drift in the open ocean for weeks before settling, which is why it's found across a huge range of the Pacific.
- Strength in numbers. Convict tangs often feed in large, roving schools that can overwhelm territorial fish guarding a prized patch of algae.
- A surgeon's spine, too. Like all surgeonfish, it carries a sharp spine near the tail — one more reason to look, not touch.
- A reef gardener. By constantly cropping algae off the rocks, it helps keep the reef clean and in balance.
