Look among rocks and rubble for a small, dark brown-gray fish that rarely strays far from one spot. Juveniles are a bit brighter, often with blue flecks and a yellowish cast. Watch for the telltale damselfish behavior — darting out to chase off any fish that crosses the line.

- Named for Acapulco. The species was first described from the waters off Acapulco, Mexico, giving it its common name.
- A reef gardener. It farms a patch of algae, grazing and tending it like a tiny crop.

- Subtle good looks. Adults are plain dusky brown, but catch the light and you'll see soft blue flecks along the body.
