Things to Do in Jacó, Costa Rica: The Perfect Half-Day Adventure

Costa Rica travel tips · October 10, 2026 · Snorkel Jaco

Jacó has no shortage of things to do — surf lessons, zip-lining, ATV tours, sport fishing, nightlife. But if you want one activity that's genuinely unlike anything else and wraps up before lunch, a guided snorkel tour to a secluded white-sand cove north of town is it. Here's why it belongs at the top of your Jacó itinerary.

Why snorkeling beats a full-day activity when you're in Jacó

Most of the big tours out of Jacó — Tortuga Island, Manuel Antonio day trips, waterfall hikes — take an entire day. That's great if that's your plan for the day, but it means you're not surfing, not eating that restaurant everyone recommended, not wandering town, not lying by the pool. An all-day tour commitment is a real cost on a short trip.

A snorkel tour is different. The whole thing — drive up, gear up, 1.5 hours in the water, drive back — is a half-morning. You're back in Jacó by noon with the whole afternoon still open.

What the tour actually looks like

You grab an Uber from your hotel (typically $5–10 from anywhere in Jacó) and head 25 minutes north along the coast to a secluded cove. We meet you there with all the gear — mask, snorkel, and fins fitted on the beach. An in-water guide takes you through the reef, pointing out fish and keeping first-timers comfortable. The whole session is about 1.5 hours in the water.

Everything is included:

The tour costs $70 per person. No hidden extras.

Three departure times: 8am, 10am, and noon. The 8am and 10am slots get the calmest water and best light for photos, but all three are great.

Your afternoon is completely yours

Here's how the math works: book a 10am tour, you're back in Jacó around 1pm. That leaves the entire afternoon for everything else Jacó is famous for:

A lot of all-day tours don't give you that. When you're paying $150+ per person and leaving at 7am, that's your day. Snorkeling a secluded cove in the morning and surfing in the afternoon is just a better day than doing one big thing.

No experience needed

We've taken nervous first-timers, little kids, grandparents, and strong swimmers — the calm, sheltered cove handles all of them. If you've never snorkeled before, this is the easiest place to start. The guide is with you the entire time, and the water stays shallow and clear near the reef.

It's genuinely the thing people remember most

We've run more than 1,000 tours over four years. The review that keeps coming back is some version of "best day of our vacation." Snorkeling a quiet, secluded cove and coming home with real photos of tropical fish tends to stick with people longer than another afternoon activity. It's the kind of thing you don't get anywhere else in the Jacó area.
