Families with kids of all ages join our tours regularly — the sheltered cove at Playa Mantas is ideal for young snorkelers.

Why the location works well for families

We snorkel at Playa Mantas, a sheltered cove about 25 minutes north of Jacó. Unlike Jacó's main beach, there's no surf, no large waves, and no current. The water is calm and you can stand in the shallows near the entry point — so nervous kids (and nervous adults) can ease in gradually without committing to open water until they're ready. Shore is always a short, comfortable swim away.

Families tell us this cove is actually less intimidating for young kids than swimming pools or hotel pools, because the water is warm, clear, and shallow near shore, and there's a lot to look at immediately.

What about gear for children?

We have child-sized masks, snorkels, and fins to fit most kids over about age 5. When you book with children, mention their ages so we can make sure we have the right equipment ready. We fit every mask on the beach before anyone enters the water — a proper fit is especially important for kids, who tend to get frustrated with a leaky mask.

Life jackets are available at no charge for any child (or adult) who wants one. Many parents put their kids in a life jacket for the first few minutes of a tour, then take it off once the child realizes they love it. No judgment either way — the tour moves at your family's pace.

Recommended minimum age: most children age 5–6 and up do great on our tours, though it depends on the child's comfort in water more than their age. If your child is a confident swimmer, they'll likely do fine. If they're nervous around water, a life jacket and a patient guide can make it work. Contact us with questions before booking — we're happy to talk through it.

What will kids see?

Kids are often the most enthusiastic fish-spotters on the tour. The parrotfish and sergeant majors are easy to see and brilliantly colored. The sea stars on the sand bottom are a big hit. Moray eels peeking from rock crevices get a great reaction. The underwater statue that's colonized by coral and fish is endlessly fascinating for children of all ages. And the free underwater photos your guide takes? Kids go absolutely wild when they see themselves swimming with fish.

Can families book private tours?
