If your Costa Rica cruise docks at Puntarenas or Caldera, you've got a limited window to see the real coast — and a guided snorkel tour near Jacó is one of the easiest ways to spend it in the water. Here's how to make it work on a tight port-day schedule.
How close is it to the cruise port?
The Puntarenas and Caldera cruise terminals are roughly an hour's drive from Jacó, and our snorkel cove near Playa Mantas is about 25 minutes north of Jacó itself. A private driver or taxi from the port makes it very doable as a self-arranged shore excursion — you snorkel a calm, clear cove and still get back aboard with time to spare.
Why it works for a port day
Port days are all about time. A full catamaran excursion can eat your entire day, but our tour runs about 1.5 hours in the water, so the whole outing fits comfortably into a shore window. Everything's included — mask, snorkel, and fins fitted for you, an in-water guide, and photos of your day — so there's no gear to rent or figure out. At $69 per person it's also an easy call compared to the pricier excursions sold on board.
Plan the timing carefully
This is the one thing to get right. Because it's a self-arranged excursion rather than a cruise-line tour, you're responsible for being back at the ship on time. We strongly recommend booking the 8am tour if your ship is in port for the day — that leaves a wide, safe buffer to get back to Puntarenas or Caldera with hours to spare. Tell us your ship's all-aboard time when you book and we'll help you pick a slot that's comfortable, not rushed.
Getting there from the port
We don't run transportation, but it's simple: arrange a taxi or private driver at the terminal to our meeting point near Jacó, and have them wait or come back for you. We'll send exact directions and meeting details when you book. Many cruise guests find a driver who'll do the round trip and wait during the tour.
Make your one day on shore count
A lot of cruise passengers never get off the tourist strip near the port. Snorkeling a quiet cove, spotting tropical fish, and coming home with real photos is the kind of Costa Rica memory that beats another souvenir stand. We've run more than 1,000 tours over four years, and port-day guests are some of our happiest. See the cove and book at snorkeljaco.com.
Not sure the timing works with your itinerary? Message us with your port and all-aboard time before you book — we'll tell you honestly whether it's a safe fit. Everything's at snorkeljaco.com.
