How to Keep Your Snorkel Mask From Fogging

Costa Rica travel tips · Snorkel Jaco

Nothing kills the magic of a reef faster than a mask that keeps fogging up. The good news: it's easy to prevent once you know why it happens. Here's the simple routine we teach on our Jacó Beach snorkel tours so you spend your time watching fish, not wiping your lens.

Why masks fog in the first place

Fog is just condensation. Warm, humid air from your face hits the cooler glass lens and turns into tiny water droplets. Brand-new masks are worse because of a thin factory film left on the glass. Beat both and you'll see clearly all morning — which is what makes Jaco Beach snorkeling so rewarding.

The pre-swim routine that works

If it fogs mid-swim

Don't fight it. Lift the bottom edge of the mask, let a little cool seawater in, swirl it across the lens, and reseal. Two seconds and you're back to a clear view. Your guide will show you the move before you get in — it's one of the first things we cover on every one of our Jacó Beach snorkel tours.

We've got you covered. Every mask we hand out is cleaned and defogged before your tour, and your guide carries extra defog in case anyone needs a touch-up. You just enjoy the reef.

New mask? Prep it once at home

Brand-new masks have that stubborn factory film. Before your trip, gently scrub the inside of the dry lens with a tiny bit of non-gel toothpaste, rinse, and repeat a couple of times. After that, the normal defog routine works every time.

Come see it for yourself

A clear mask turns a good swim into a great one. We run three tours a day (8am, 10am, noon), about 1.5 hours in the water for $69 per person — mask, fins, guide and photos included. It's a short Uber north of Jacó to a calm cove near Playa Mantas, and the clear water is exactly what makes Jaco Beach snorkeling worth it.
