1. Valid Driver’s License
Visitors from the United States can generally drive using a valid U.S. driver’s license during their authorized immigration stay, subject to Costa Rican law.
Your driver’s license must be valid and appropriate for the vehicle you are operating.
An international driving permit is generally not required for visitors holding a valid U.S. driver’s license.
2. Passport and Immigration Documents
Foreign visitors should have their passport and evidence of their legal immigration status available.
Your authorized immigration stay is important because it can determine how long you may legally drive with a foreign license.
3. Vehicle Registration
Vehicles registered in Costa Rica must have valid registration.
Make sure the vehicle is legally registered and that the required documentation is available for inspection.
4. Marchamo — Annual Vehicle Circulation Permit
The Marchamo is Costa Rica’s annual vehicle circulation payment.
It includes mandatory automobile insurance and other applicable charges.
The required circulation sticker should be properly displayed on the windshield.
5. Technical Vehicle Inspection — DEKRA
Vehicles subject to Costa Rica’s technical inspection requirements must have a current inspection.
These inspections examine important vehicle safety and mechanical components, including brakes, tires, lights, emissions, and other systems.
6. Mandatory Automobile Insurance
Costa Rica requires compulsory automobile insurance, commonly included with the Marchamo for locally registered vehicles.
Additional voluntary insurance is strongly recommended for greater protection.
Rental vehicles may have separate insurance requirements, deductibles, and coverage options.
7. Driving Someone Else’s Vehicle
You can generally operate a vehicle belonging to another person with the owner’s permission, provided you are legally authorized to drive it.
A separate written authorization is not ordinarily required for routine domestic driving, but documenting the owner’s permission can be helpful.
Special requirements may apply to rental vehicles, commercial operations, and international border crossings.
8. Driving Vehicles With Foreign License Plates
Vehicles temporarily imported into Costa Rica may require additional documentation, including:
- Valid vehicle registration from the country of origin.
- Temporary customs import authorization.
- Applicable vehicle insurance.
- Valid driver’s license and immigration documentation.
Verify the requirements with Costa Rican customs before operating a foreign-plated vehicle.
