What a Tárcoles River crocodile tour is like

Most crocodile tours near Jacó are relaxed boat safaris up the Tárcoles River and its mangroves. A local captain cruises the calm water while a guide points out the big crocs sunning themselves on the muddy banks — some of them seriously large. It's wild, it's close, and it's all from the comfort of the boat.

A birdwatcher's paradise, too

The Tárcoles isn't just about crocodiles. The river and its mangroves are one of the richest birding areas in the country, and the boat is one of the easiest ways to see it. Look for herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills, kingfishers and royal terns along the banks and sandbars — and because Carara National Park is right there, you'll often spot scarlet macaws flying overhead in pairs.

Don't miss the free Crocodile Bridge

If you're driving the coastal highway (Route 34) toward the Central Valley, stop at the famous Tárcoles Crocodile Bridge. Walk out onto the pedestrian walkway, look down, and you'll usually see a handful of huge crocodiles basking on the sandbanks below. It's free, it's quick, and it's an easy add-on before or after a boat tour.
