It's one of the most common questions we get, so let's answer it honestly: no, there are no dangerous sharks to worry about on our Jacó Beach snorkel tours. The cove we snorkel near Playa Mantas is a calm, shallow, reef-edged spot — not a place big predators hang around. Here's the full picture.
What actually lives on the reef
The reef by our cove is full of the small, colorful stuff you came to see: parrotfish, angelfish, pufferfish, sergeant majors, the occasional moray eel tucked in the rocks, and sometimes a harmless stingray gliding over the sand. These are the headliners of the best snorkeling Jaco beach has to offer, and none of them are a threat to a snorkeler.
So what about sharks?
Costa Rica's Pacific does have sharks in its deeper offshore waters — but the shallow, sheltered cove where we snorkel is not that environment. In thousands of tours over four years, our guests simply don't encounter dangerous sharks here. On the rare occasion anyone spots a small, shy whitetip reef shark resting on the bottom at a dive site, it wants nothing to do with people — they're harmless to snorkelers and quickly swim off. At our cove, even that is uncommon.
Why our cove is so safe
- Shallow and sheltered — a protected cove, not open ocean, so the water stays calm and clear.
- A guide in the water with you the whole time, watching the group and the conditions.
- Flotation vests available so you can relax and float, even if you're not a strong swimmer.
- Small reef species only — the fish here are curious and harmless, which is exactly what makes it great Jaco beach snorkeling.
Come see a friendly reef for yourself
If the fear of sharks has been holding you back, let it go — our guests routinely call this the highlight of their trip, not something to be nervous about. We run three tours a day (8am, 10am, noon), about 1.5 hours in the water for $69 per person, gear, guide and photos included, at a calm cove a short Uber north of Jacó. It really is the best snorkel tour Jacó beach has for a safe, beautiful look at the reef.
